  • Could Waikawa Beach flood disastrously?

    What would we do?

    Summary

The worst could happen at Waikawa Beach — we could be flooded and isolated. Here’s why that’s now an actual possibility, even if, with any luck, remote, and some questions that arise.

  • How might slower and wetter storms affect Waikawa Beach?

Originally published on the now defunct Love Waikawa Beach website, 07 June 2018. The globe’s hurricanes have seen a striking slowdown in their speed of movement across landscapes and seascapes over the past 65 years, a finding that suggests rising rainfall and storm-surge risks … Slower-moving storms will rain more over a given area, batter that area longer with their winds and pile up more water ahead of them as they approach shorelines, said Jim Kossin, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the study’s author.

  • Don't gather kai moana after storms

A reminder from Ministry for Primary Industries: Collecting kai moana Avoid collecting live seafood from the ocean straight after any large-storm events due to the increased risk of contamination from stormwater runoff or overflows from sewerage systems. Do not gather any dead fish or shellfish that have washed up on beaches, no matter how fresh they may look, as they can contain harmful bacteria. See also Food safety in the home.

  • New water safety signs installed

I noticed today two similar but different water safety signs Horizons Regional Council have put up. One at the footbridge has advice about swimming in estuaries. The other was by the south track to the beach off Reay Mackay Grove and has advice about swimming in the sea. Signs include a warning about bacteria — seldom a problem at our beach, but an ongoing problem in the river. There are warnings about currents, driftwood and keeping children within arm’s length, and also the advice to not swim within 72 hours of heavy or prolonged rainfall.

  • New Tsunami Safe Zone marking

A new Tsunami Safe Zone road marking, a blue line, has been painted near the intersection of Waikawa Beach Road with Takapu Road. This is about 1 Km closer to SH1 than the previous line that was painted back in August 2017. The new line looks a lot fresher and a bit snazzier, but I was wondering why it had been moved so I asked the Horowhenua District Council.

  • Orange tsunami risk for us beach dwellers

The Government has created a nationwide tsunami evacuation map. It’s not surprising that if we plug in a Waikawa Beach address we show up as being in the Orange zone or maybe the Yellow zone. Note though that the beach north of the river mouth (across the footbridge) right up to Ōhau is all Red zone. I’ve looked all over but can’t find any definitions for the Yellow, Orange and Red zones.

  • Pedestrian access through Manga Pirau Street beach entrance

There had been some complaints that the concrete blocks across the Manga Pirau Street beach access were placed in a way that pedestrians couldn’t get through. They’ve now been shifted around a bit and people can walk through a gap that’s been created. The only real problem now is that there’s nowhere to go. The river is flowing very close to where the track is cut off. The photo below from 16 June 2022 shows the narrow strip of sand you could walk along.

Over on the Waikawa Beach Facebook Page Charlie Strivens, Moderator, has offered to convene a Covid buddy system for Waikawa Beach. A Covid buddy would help someone get the things they need if they are isolating. In part, the post says: Hi Community As the Omincron outbreak has been getting more serious I have been thinking about how our local community can be resilient and how how we can support each other.

  • Safety and convenience: horses on the South Track

We have a safety issue on Waikawa Beach, and it’s to do with horses. We want your views about what action to take. Imagine this: you’re down on the beach enjoying your favourite recreational activity, perhaps flying a kite or model aircraft or riding your dirt bike. The kite’s fluttering in the breeze, swooping and diving. It’s good fun. Now a horse and rider come along after a good jaunt along the beach.
