What are whitebait?
Whitebait are the juveniles of six freshwater fish (īnanga, banded kōkopu, giant kōkopu, shortjaw kokopu, kōaro and common smelt) which return upstream each spring to find suitable adult habitat. Four of these species are threatened or at risk of extinction.
